East German workers began construction. They destroyed streets that were along the border and added barbed wire. The first concrete and stone elements were added in the 17th of August. Soldiers were placed around the construction of the wall and were ordered to shoot anyone on sight. Chain fences, mine fields, and other obstacles were added also. There was an area, known as "No Man's Land," that allowed a clear line of fire on escaping refugees.
