The wall officially came down in November 9,1989. People with tools began to break away pieces of the wall and collected souvenirs. They created a few unofficial border crossings in the process. The East German regime announced ten new border crossings that weekend. Crowds of people stood there cheerfully awaiting the bulldozers to come. This event was televised. On July 1, East Germany adopted the currency of West Germany. Only small sections and watchtowers remained, standing as memorials.
